Description

Stratum. The first repair layer of rammed earth (an outer addition); test excavation of the Huaiyang county seat in the 1980s. The added layer is 1.5-2 m wide and raises the wall 1.5 m above the original height, with rammed courses 0.10-0.15 m thick. Pottery finds are still predominantly flat and tube tiles, along with yan steamers, dou dishes, pottery net-sinkers, bronze ant-nose coins, and iron implements; the Chu coins were likely dropped into the rammed fill by wall-building laborers. Based on the Chu coins found, this repair should postdate Chu's conquest of Chen (278 BCE) and was carried out by Chu. The wall underwent three repairs in total; the second repair added a layer 4.4 m wide, with rammed courses 12-17 cm thick. Among the finds, the flat tiles have round lips, coarse cord-marking on the exterior, applied cord decoration, and impressed dot-matrix patterns on the interior; the tube tiles have sharply defined tenon joints; the pottery basins have folded rims with square, inward-curving lips; the dou dishes have shallow, folded-belly bowls; the fu cauldrons are a new vessel form; the ant-nose coins have a raised (convex) reverse. This repair episode should date to the late Warring States period. Excavated in 1980.
