Description
Tomb; found together with a pottery ding-tripod, a pottery dui vessel, a pottery hu pot, a four-mountain-pattern bronze mirror (9.2 cm diameter, 0.3 cm rim thickness), and bronze arrowheads. Grave goods were concentrated at the head end of the tomb floor (south-by-east); the ant-nose coin was not wrapped when buried. Specimen M1:3 is 1.8 cm long, 1.2 cm wide, 0.4 cm thick, and weighs about 1 g. Based on the ding-dui-hu pottery assemblage and the four-mountain mirror's features, the date is mid-to-late Warring States. The two tombs (this one and the 1994 Chenshangtie M12) together yielded 4 ant-nose coins, identical in form with only slight size variation, all inscribed "Xun." Chenzhou lies at the junction of Hunan, Guangdong, and Jiangxi, at the southern edge of the distribution of Chu cowrie-money -- ant-nose coins are comparatively rare finds in tombs here. The precise findspot is unrecorded; provisionally understood as the construction site of the Chenzhou Prefecture Engineering Company at Feijiping.
