Description
Stratum, upper layer, Mapengcun, Zhuba Township. In 1971 a farmer digging earth at the site found a hoard of 13 "Qi Fa Hua" knife coins; the pottery jar had been damaged and the coins had scattered, with only one recovered at the time of the survey. This shows that Qi influence also extended south to this area; the upper stratum of the Sunzhuang site also contains Eastern-Zhou-culture remains, with collected sherds mostly red pottery. The "Sunzhuang Site" entry (2-A2) in the Atlas of Chinese Cultural Relics, Jiangsu Volume, confirms this event: Sunzhuang, Mapengcun, Zhuba Town; Neolithic and Eastern Zhou periods; the site stands 2 m above the surrounding ground, over 10,000 sq m in area, with cultural deposits about 1 m thick. The lower layer contains Qingliangang-culture remains, with sherds mostly sand-tempered reddish-brown ware and clay-paste red ware, in forms including ding-tripods, fu cauldrons, bo bowls, dou dishes, jars, and basins, decorated with fingernail impressions and appliqué bands; the upper layer belongs to the Eastern Zhou cultural stratum, and in 1971 this site yielded 13 "Qi Fa Hua" knife coins -- fully consistent with this entry.
