Description

Stratum, upper layer, Tanggengcun, Sanhe Township. Two ant-nose coins, specimens 89HT4 and 89HT5, were picked up at the site, with the incised character "Xun" on the cowrie face, popularly called "ghost-face" coins. The upper stratum of the Tanggeng site overlies a Western Zhou cultural layer and belongs to the Eastern Zhou period; collected sherds are mostly gray pottery, with some stamped hard pottery also seen. The "Tanggeng Site" entry (3-A3) in the Atlas of Chinese Cultural Relics, Jiangsu Volume: southeast of Tangcaocun, Sanhe Town; Zhou dynasty; the site consists of two adjoining mounds, front and back, oval in plan, about 200 m north-south and 150 m east-west, about 30,000 sq m in area, the mounds standing 2.5 m high with cultural deposits about 3 m thick. Finds include clay-paste gray sherds of li-tripods, bu jars, dou dishes, basins, and bo bowls, plus meander-pattern hard-pottery sherds, ant-nose coins, and bronze paring knives; the eastern half of the site has already been built over by the Huaining Highway. (The coordinates given in the Atlas clearly do not match Hongze County's actual geographic location, likely an error in the Atlas's original data; this entry does not adopt that coordinate.)
