Description
Context unknown. In the autumn of the 18th year of the Republic (1929), villagers of Tielanqi Village (an alternate transcription of Xianglanqicun), 5 li north of Xiongyue City under the jurisdiction of Gaiping County, dug up a great quantity of ancient coins from the ground, all Warring-States-period spade currency. Those who obtained the coins subsequently brought them to the provincial capital and sold them at the Chonggu Studio, numbering some several hundred pieces, very badly corroded. From among these, nineteen were selected as worth examining, and these are what is presented in the source article. These nineteen pieces divide into two kinds, square-foot and pointed-foot, most of which are already recorded in Li Zuoxian's Gu Quan Hui (Compendium of Ancient Coins), while Liu Xinyuan's discussion in Qi Gu Shi Ji Jin Wen Shu (Records of Bronze Inscriptions from the Qigu Studio) differs somewhat from Li's and may also be drawn on for comparison. It is only because Li was truly able to synthesize the strengths of the various scholars and arrive at a well-balanced judgment that the source article draws very little on numismatic works earlier than Li's. Among the coins unearthed on this occasion, Wang Mang-era "Mang Ping" coins were the most numerous, but only one was reasonably intact and was included in the record; the rest were set aside. (The original 1931 article by Jin Yufu writes the village name as "Tielanqicun"; this table locates it as "Xianglanqicun," presumed to be a variant transcription of the same name.)
