Description
Context unknown. Located on hilly slope land 400 m south of Sanshilipu Village, Guxian Subdistrict, Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone. The city was first built in the Spring-and-Autumn/Warring-States period and remained in use into the Han dynasty. The wall outline is clear, running straight in places and following the terrain in others, forming an irregular four-sided earthen enclosure. The east wall is 395 m long; the south, north, and west walls are each 450 m long; the surviving wall stands up to 2 m high, built of rammed yellow clay. Moats run along both the east and west sides of the city. The palace area lay in the southwest of the city, with a smelting workshop in the northeast; Warring-States Qi three-character knife coins and pottery casting moulds were unearthed before the founding of the People's Republic of China, and smelting/casting slag is still exposed in the north of the city. Finds are predominantly Han-dynasty, including pottery dou dishes and jars, "Qianqiu Wansui" tile-ends, stone mills, iron ploughshares, and steatite "San Zhu" coin-casting moulds; a small amount of Warring-States material was also collected, including pottery jar rims and tree-pattern half tile-ends. Recorded discovery year: 1949.
