Description

Context unknown. The Haixing County Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Institute, Cangzhou, Hebei, disclosed on the 24th that staff of the institute and the county gazetteer office, while conducting a cultural-relics survey at Xiaoquhecun, Zhaomaotao Town, Haixing County, discovered a stretch of rammed-earth city wall along with large quantities of remains spanning the Spring-and-Autumn period to the Han dynasty. Experts assess that this site matches the old city of Zhangwu County recorded in ancient texts as dating to the Warring-States-through-Han period, and should be a county-level old city site of that era. According to Zhou Xuanhong, director of the Haixing institute, the rammed-earth wall and finds lie along a drainage channel over 500 m long, running north-south, south of Xiaoquhecun, and within the surrounding 2 sq km area. The finds include Spring-and-Autumn-through-Han pottery brick-and-tile architectural components of various sizes (flat and tube types), and pottery sherds of li-tripods, basins, jars, and dou dishes in sand-tempered, shell-tempered, black-tempered, and gray-tempered wares, as well as brick wells, beacon towers, stone mills, and other finds -- some sherds bear characters including "Yan" (wild goose). Zhou said that, taking together dou dishes and basins excavated in previous years, bronze and iron arrowheads and dagger-axes, Warring-States Zhao spade coins inscribed "Zhongyi" and others, Yan "Ming Dao" coins, Han "Wuzhu" coins, and related documentary sources, they assess this to be a county-level old city site of the Warring-States-through-Han period. Discovered in 2014.
